Mayor A. Sohi called the meeting to order at 9:33 a.m., Monday, December 13, 2021, and acknowledged that City Council meets on the traditional land of Treaty 6 Territory. The Chair also acknowledged the diverse Indigenous peoples whose ancestors' footsteps have marked this territory for centuries such as: Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Nakota Sioux, as well as Metis and Inuit, and now settlers from around the world.

Councillor T. Cartmell, on behalf of City Council, recognized that the Canada Basketball, along with KidSport Edmonton and Alberta Basketball Association is launching the Bryan Anderson Memorial Fund. Bryan was instrumental in creating the original basketball partnership between Canada Basketball, Alberta Basketball Association and the City of Edmonton. The Bryan Anderson Memorial Fund is a multi-year partnership that will work to increase opportunities for girls from families facing financial barriers to access basketball programs in Edmonton.

Mayor A. Sohi, on behalf of City Council, recognized the Valley Line West Project Team was presented with the Gold Award for Project Development for their design-build-finance procurement on November 17, 2021. This award was from the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships (CCPPP). These awards are presented annually to showcase Canadian excellence and innovation in project financing, service delivery, infrastructure investment and/or generation of economic benefit, which result in enhanced quality of public services and facilities.

Mayor A. Sohi stated that at the next regular meeting of City Council, he would move the following:

That Administration provide a report outlining how the City of Edmonton can help to increase the number of affordable childcare spaces accessible to Edmontonians by investigating, but not exclusively, the following options:

  • Using the Zoning Bylaw as well as current and future development plans to remove bylaw barriers that may currently exist;
  • Using City-owned and operated facilities throughout the city to provide affordable and accessible space that could be used by child care providers;
  • Working to develop a comprehensive Child Care Strategy that:
    • Considers how to provide spaces, including outside of the traditional needs of 9-5 work hours, that will meet the needs of all families;
    • Fosters greater collaboration between school boards, local non-profits, and community organizations, such as community leagues, and child-care providers.
