Deputy Mayor E. Rutherford, on behalf of City Council, recognized November 5 as the beginning of Veterans’ Week in Canada. Our country has a long and distinguished history of defending and maintaining peace around the globe and here in the Edmonton Region, we are proud to be the home of the 3rd Canadian Division Support Base. Today, thousands of our neighbours, friends and family members serve at the base, providing critical support to other Canadian Armed Forces. Service members include the First Nations, Inuit and Métis People of Canada who have an esteemed tradition of military service. Veterans’ Week allows Edmontonians to share gratitude for the bravery of all those who serve our country. It’s a time to commemorate their many sacrifices. And it’s a time to remember that the freedoms and peace we enjoy today are only possible because of the people who bravely protect them. During this week and beyond, Edmontonians are encouraged to join us in recognizing the dedication of our Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. Residents can also pay their respects by wearing a poppy, thanking local service members and supporting veterans organizations.

Deputy Mayor E. Rutherford, on behalf of City Council, recognized November 7 as Inuit Day. Established by the Inuit Circumpolar Council in 2006, November 7 is dedicated to honouring the diverse cultures, languages and history of Inuit people and amplifying their voices. The Inuit Circumpolar Council represents a diverse community of about 180,000 Inuit with a unified voice and is dedicated to protecting their way of life and advocating for their Indigenous rights.
